April 2024 Review

So, I saw Dune Part Two. On a very much related note, I am relatively convinced that Denis Villeneuve is, in fact, the Messiah. The Lisan Al Gaib, so to speak. Because, I mean, wow. It could be considered conjecture to call the Dune adaptions by Denis this generation’s Star Wars, but, then again, people who consider that statement conjecture would be considered wrong.

Really, there is just so much to praise about the second Dune film. It hits all the right notes at all the right volumes, and I feel it is able to do this because of the film’s ability to hone in on the little things. Small interactions and character moments lend credence and sincerity to those larger-than-life sequences and scenes later in the film. Relativity is inherent to scale, and films as huge and epic and monumental as Dune Part Two only can really feel that way to the audience if we have something to ground ourselves to in those stories.

Denis’s Dune Part Two provides that. Through Paul’s hesitancy, through his tender moments with Chani, through his genuine joy in finding Gurney. There are countless other examples, and a limitless supply of craft-oriented things this film does spectacularly, but that’s for me to mention in the review, right? Not the blog post about the review. So, check it out...
